Periodontal Disease Diagnosis

Periodontal disease is diagnosed in a patient through a thorough periodontal exam. A specialized probe is used to measure the depth of the gum pockets around each tooth in a patient's mouth. Measurements are taken at six specific sites on each patient's tooth. The measured depth gives an objective gauge to the true health of your gums. If the pockets bleed relatively easily during the probing, this is noted in the patient's chart as well. This bleeding is a tell-tale sign of inflammation of the specific pocket. The amount of tartar, or calculus, is also determined by the Dr Desai. The mobility of all teeth is checked thoroughly. Finally, images of all teeth are needed for Dr Desai to determine the condition of the bone around each patient tooth and reveal calculus deposits present below the patient's gumline.

First Implant Visit

In planning the best treatment for you, a complete and comprehensive examination and implant records need to be taken in order to plan the options of implant replacement for you. Diagnostic records including digital images, study models, photos and possibly a CT scan. All this information including your individual desires will determine the ideal treatment. It is impossible to predict costs and time frame of treatment without these records and information for treatment planning. Dr. Desai will work hand in hand with your family dentist and yourself to develop a treatment plan which will work with your budget.

Occasionally, if a patient does not have adequate bone for implant placement (ie not enough wood to place the drywall screw in) then bone grafting can be done to "add this bone back" so the implant has enough bone to live in.

STEPS OF STANDARD TREATMENT:

  1. Traditional Dental Implants
Implants are gently placed in the bone surgically. They are then left for a period of weeks-months so that the bone can grow around the implants to form a strong fusion. During this phase, you will have temporary teeth so that you never are without teeth.

  2. Abutment Attachment Procedure
A small connector post "abutment" is attached to the inner implant. The permanent replacement teeth will eventually be attached to this abutment. THIS CAN BE DONE BY EITHER YOUR DENTIST OR DR DESAI.

  3. Fabrication of Replacement Teeth
Impressions are taken of your teeth and the implant abutments. The appropriate shade for your new teeth will be selected and YOUR DENTIST will fabricate your new teeth and the underlying structures that will be attached to the implants. This process can take one to two weeks.

    STEP by STEP IMPLANT BRIDGE

  4. All-on-4 Procedure/TEETH IN A DAY
This new procedure is suitable for people who have dentures. After the initial consultation and planning, patients can replace dentures with just four implants and a full set of replacement teeth in one appointment. This is done without any bone grafting.
